Why did Apple discontinue the Smart Case?

This accessory prolonged the iPhone life and it was 100% supported by Apple, so it worked perfectly with the iPhone.

I strongly believe they discontinued it since it slowed down sales for people who upgrade their phones, since one of the big reasons people might upgrade is the battery.
